Me and Linux

Over the weekend i dual boot installed Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 8600. I was on the one hand impressed (installation went more or less flawless, although i expected the install to offer me to create a dual-boot setup) and dismayed at the same time.

This was the first time (have not tried it for 18months) that i was able to even install Linux on one of my machines and have all the major pieces of hardware be supported. But the dismay is caused by several factors.

On the one hand, the setup worked, but is still so cryptic, so badly designed that i would never ever expect the typical Mort user to be able to do this. Considering than Ubuntu is widely believed to be the most user friendly Linux distribution, that’s stating that there is still a long way to go for Linux to be a good desktop citizen.

Then i wanted to update the video driver, as the built in one does not really support power management (fan blows constantly, which is rather annoying on a laptop). That’s a crusade, to say the least. I will post separately about this when the thing is solved one way or the other.

Now i am off reading Linux documentation….
