Microsoft still does not get it…

I just read a post about avalon express. It contained the following quote:

A lot of our customers do not understand security nitty-gritty’s. And there is little reason they should.

This is the guiding principle that resulted in a world where Windows and it’s applications are no longer trusted. It’s not because the developers doing this are stupid. It’s not because the customer using the application is stupid. But, if you were never told that you should be locking the door when you leave the house, it’s no wonder when you get into a rather unpleasant situation sometimes in the future.

The customer needs to understand security. Windows is, and for a long time it has been that way, a system that you could make reasonable secure. You could have updated your SQL database, and heck, Slammer would have never happened.

As long as Microsoft believes that they, and their developers, know better, and therefore do not see the need to educate the customer, to treat him as an equal in the war against Viruses and security theft, they will not have a fighting chance to win this.
