The XBox Rom…

A friend pointed me to this article about the discovery of the XBox bios inner workings and the flaws in it.

This is an interesting article in so many ways. For one, it falls in the category of “why DRM systems will never be secure”. Give me the keys to decrypt and i can always hack the algorithm.

On the other hand, it shows how sloppy in some respects Microsoft engineering has become, i really love this quote:

“Apparently the i386 CPU family throws no exception in this case, Microsoft’s engineers only assumed it or misread the documentation and never tested it.”

Reading the whole article I really wonder if Microsoft is overall by now just so resource strapped that quality testing is out of consideration, or if the engineers & testers involved just did not care enough (In my opinion, making the XBox easy to hack would be a good thing for the market and for the XBox) about a disabling feature.
